re: The Varisian and the Confused Barbarian

The two women enter Keeper's Pass appearing mirror images of one another save one in tattered robes and the other in nearly broken armor. The woman in robes bent over, hands on knees, gasping, "We made it!"

The armored woman nodded curtly, her eyes wondering as if seeking further threats both behind and ahead, "Without those escorts helping, we would not have made it."

"I made it, by stealth, but I would not wish to try again until I recover. We owe them." The woman in tattered robes stood up straight having recovered her breath.

"You mean, *I* owe them."

"*WE* owe them, Rogamae." (ROW-gah MAY)

The woman in armor smiled to her companion, "You say. Well, Dar, what now?"

"Now? Now we introduce ourselves as beggers upon the hospitality of someone here that may allow us to rest and recover."

"No, you won't. You'll insist on paying them, hoping they won't demand 'favors'."

Dar smiled wryly, "Aye. Well, it appears our friends that helped us arrive are still playing with the Big Boys. Let's find lodging on credit tonight for work tomorrow, and hope for the best. I hate sleeping in the open."

"Squishy Varisian," taunted Rogamae.

"Confused Barbarian, " replied Dar.

Edam Neadenil, the dwarven Guardian of Light at Keeper's Pass and Cleric of Sarenrae notices two slightly bedraggled looking characters looking around the settlement, they have clearly just come in from a long and arduous journey:

"Welcome and well met. May Sarenrae smile upon you both. My name is Edam and this is my elven adopted soul brother Enil.  Though dwarven and elven we share a common destiny under Pharisma.

Whether you are looking for a place for some temporary respite from the evil hordes to the North or are seeking a new home where you may prosper  - you have found the right place in either case.

All those of good heart prepared to work together on our goal to build a strong community and a good life and prosperity for all are welcome here.

If you should need anything or have questions give myself or Enil a hail. "

The woman in robes presumes to speak for both, "Thank you, kind sir! I am Darsadi Callinova (dar-SAW-dee CAL-in-oh-vah), late of Varisia, and this is my companion Rogamae. We simply need a place to be safe for the evening and rest from harm, and we would remain to work our debt. We do not ask for a pillowed bed with sheets, we just need nothing more than to sleep without keeping fitful watch and turn, and we can work off a reasonable credit. What might you suggest for my companion and I?"

(( rolls for diplomacy, sense motive would reveal no guile, manner is that of a traveler used to hardship, but speech is that of a Varisian accented caravan merchant. The robes are typical of an apprentice caster, perhaps a wizard of some sort. The companion Rogamae stands silent and watchful, by appearance a twin, but showing the signs of healed scars and rough living. ))

"We are a crafting center at heart but this is also hard times and the mountains a short way to our north are regularly infested with Cultists and Goblins and there are rumors of late that Druegar or an Elemental Rift might threaten our sleepy settlement at any time."

" For simple food and board we would require only a few gathered materials for our refineries occasionally, hemp is much desired at present by our refiners to make rope. Feel free to sell any surplus you gather at a Auction House, it is not expected you donate all your efforts to the settlement. Alternatively if gathering is not something you specialize in, your willingness to occasionally join our parties that regularly head out to take down the threats around us will suffice. "

"If you have need of specific weapons or armor to replace what you have lost in your travels or to upgrade our Guardian of Iron, the master artificer and mage Kazil,  can advise you on what the Ring of Iron would require in return for any item you need."

As Darsadi listened intently, Rogamae scowled and began to fidget. When the dwarf finished, the warrior took a step forward, positioned in front of and to the side of the caster. As Darsadi began to speak, Rogamae raised her arm at the elbow as if to halt a squad, fist closed, palm forward, partially blocking the caster's view and interrupting. Rogamae raised fingers as she began to count off terse words: "Sleep! Where? Direction? Name? Now!" As she lowered her arm, Rogamae appeared as an acolyte attempting her first clumsy orison, with a grimace that might be a smile said, "Please?"

Darsadi blushed and stammered, but the warrior raised her arm again with one finger demanding silence from her companion. The Rogamae waited the dwarf's reply with an arched eyebrow, no longer attempting a smile.

(( OOC Note: Thank you for the response. For the moment, playing it "full RP mode" with the mindset of two exhausted women, one of whom talks entirely too much ... my character... and my wife's character who roleplays very little but she likes to "beat on stuff". I did the reply consulting with my wife and posting on her behalf with approval of her character's actions. My hope is to "roleplay" here based on the things our characters do within the game and give them a "live" that PFO can't quite capture at this time. And yes, I understand you were trying to be helpful and welcoming, and we are grateful. But back to the two weary women...))

Direct and to the point, we appreciate that down here in the South East.

You can find a bed at the "Laughing Ogre" the inn over yonder near the Auction House. Do not be afraid of the ogre that runs it, her family have been inn keepers at Keeper's Pass for generations she is a shrewd businesswoman but kind of heart and always fair. Tell her that Edam sent you and she will find you a room and assign you a few chores to pay for your board and food.

OOC: No-one has actually given the innkeeper a name yet

"Pet ogre... by auction house. Got it." Rogamae started to drag along her companion in the direction suggested, and they fade into the night.

"Ugh! We need money," said Darsadi the following afternoon. "Washing mugs and platters, cleaning privy's, I've not done that in a long time.'

Rogamae placed another chunk of wood on the stump, then hefted her axe. "Does you good, keeps you humble. If you are finished, I'm about done here and we can see about coin."

"Grumpymae was pretty satisfied with my work, and we are invited back for coin or a morning's work again."

"And you'll not be causing me to sleep outside from her hearing that. She has a name, you know."

Darsadi nodded, "I really don't remember much about last night, but I'm rested and I should be ok for casting."

"Still feel out-of-sorts?"

"Yeah. I have to cast from a book, I have to take time to read it like a wizard."

"And no pointy ears?"

The caster pouted, "My pointy ears are still gone. I wish I understood."

"Well, we'll do the best we can while here." With a satisfying snap, Rogamae shattered the last log of the pile, then stacked the pieces neatly with the mornings work. "Done. Ideas, boss?"

"Two lovely, innocent women taking a stroll, hope there are no bandits about." The caster smiled sweetly.

"Oh no... or dangerous goblins. What harm might befall us?" responded the warrior with a feral grin.

"I thought you said they were bandits!"

"I said they were cultists. I thought you said we could take them!"

"I thought you said they were bandits," responded Rogamae as they returned to town. "And I lost my armor. This isn't working."

"I should have guessed they would attack first and assess 'innocence' later."

"Desna bless all the squishy Varisians while Gorum sharpens His blade. So now what?"

"Well, we can hardly make money in the wilds with you going about naked."

"I'm not naked." Rogamae looks at her worn and dirty armor padding, "Well, by Gorum's broken cuirass, I suppose I am. Damn the rotters!"

"I told you they were bandits." Darsadi stopped at the bank, considering. "Hang around, I'll be back."

"Where are you going?"

"Calling in a favor, and getting some credit while we are at it. We need gear."

********************

Several days later, a dark skinned dwarf trotted up to the town from the south, "What ho! Is this Keeper's Pass?"

"Yes, indeed. Your name and business?"

"Servus Optio, and I'm here at the request of Darsadi Callinova. Where might she be?"

"We just keep an eye out for invasion, we don't meddle."

"Ah thank'ee. I'll just... eh.." The dwarf lost words as the guard turned to face the wilderness and pointedly ignored him. "Torag's busted anvil... how rude!" The dwarf headed for a tall, stone building across the settlement.

Dorin had heard of the two newcomers to Keeper's Pass, so he should not have been surprised to run into the two  human women while out doing a routine gold gathering run.  He gave pause at first, making sure they were not Golgothans.

"Hello." He said before one of them spoke back.

"We are only passing through to the North in search of training, we do not wish to interfere with your gathering." Was the reply he received.  By now he knew they were the newest members of the settlement.

"I ain't worried, you two are the new members of Keepers Pass right?" He inquired just to confirm his suspicions.

"Yes." Was the reply.

"Ah, I thought so.  Well I happen to be a skilled smelter and Armorsmith and I offer me services to members of the Keepers for free if you need anything." The warrior of the two would definitely use his armoring skills though the Varisian would most likely make better use of Kazil our tailor.

"We prefer to work for our gear, though we would be happy to trade for some armor." One of them said in reply.

A very honorable stance Dorin thought to himself. "Very well then."  By this time he had made it back to one if the recently built mines near the settlement.  The two women followed.

"I am Rogamae and this is my companion Darsadi. We have iron ore in exchange for some armor."

"Aye! Of course I will take ye iron ore though I must get to me other supply of coal in Keepers Pass to construct the armor.  Me name is Dorin by the way and this be our mine."

With that, the group travel back to Keepers Pass and Dorin started work on the armor immediately.

OOC - A set of soldiers chain +2 is ready for you when we meet back in game, it was a pleasure meeting you both.

(( OOC: Dorin, thank you very kindly! We've been moving around and learning, as you shall see... ))

Darsadi waved to her companion, "Sleep well, I have to study in the library."

"Don't exhaust yourself, you need your sleep too today if we are to hunt again this evening," the warrior grumped as she clomped off to her room at The Inn. Lately the women have been able to afford coin for both of them and their dwarf companion, though the room was very small and they took turns keeping the room to themselves.

"Yeah, I'll be in after a bit. I want to be well rested. We have to be in top shape to keep up our reputations as 'ladies of the night.'"

Rogamae scowled, "For that you can sleep by the hearth downstairs. I'll be locking the door, see I don't!" She stormed off.

Darsadi giggled to herself. Together with their dwarf friend, they settled into an easy schedule of hunting for skins, plants, and wayward would-be thugs and robbers in the area at night, while Servus Optio rested. During the day, Servus worked the supplies returned and sold them for a little coin while the women slept. Together, the three of them had a working fund to purchase tools, supplies and food. But without a windfall, it would be a very long time before they had funds to be properly equipped for a proper caravan train.

Within the very small library, Darsadi began to write her thoughts in flowing script. As she wrote, she appeared unaware of any around her, totally removed from distraction.

"Callinova... the Blood of Varisia, flowing through Her veins, moving goods, money, life itself, keeping the balance so the strong protect the weak, without the weak becoming parasites or slaves. We are the balance to provide a framework of order without caging creativity and freedom of expression. We keep The Good from becoming the monster they would seek to fight, The Law from becoming the murderer and thief of the learning, the creative, the 'work in progress'. Our task is to prevent Evil from crushing the Joy of Living, and Chaos from swallowing peace, hope, love, aspirations of a future, the certainty of a better future and the hope that comes with it.

"Clan Callinova: We are the balance. This is what we do by trade. I am a trader, I need to be trading. Circle of gold... I need to find out more and talk with them."

The woman finished writing, set her pen in the ink well, and began to meditate upon the words she wrote.

(( OOC'ly, if someone found this interesting and happened to role-play noticing what she was writing, that would be cool. If I don't get a response in a day or so I'll have Dar introduce herself to the Circle of Gold after I do a bit more research and OOC'ly make contact with something I think we can do at our level that makes sense. I'm going to try VERY hard to reveal what she thinks by the action people can see her do.))

((OOC: Our current Guardian of Gold is away due to real life reasons I'm afraid, but when he does return he will be highly pleased to see another merchant and a role player :). I can at least help with Gold related matters in the meanwhile. ))

It had been good to hear that travelers were arriving in Keeper's Pass just as it was to hear that several were calling Keeper's Pass home.  The young woman with dark brown hair and green eyes pushed open the Library door. She often liked to come here after a long day tending to the day to day matters of helping to run a Settlement. Had I not the rest of the Council, I would have gone insane, she thought to herself. No where in her wildest dreams had she considered being a leader of a Settlement let alone being stationary.

She paused a moment as she entered noticing another inside. A Varisian, judging by the woman's clothing. Nadya carefully closed the door behind her so as to not disturb anyone within. While she too was a Varisian, she had never been to the home country. The caravan trains of Ustalav had been her home before striking out to find adventure in the River Kingdoms.

When the woman set down her pen, Nadya approached to find out who this was as well as to introduce herself.  "Good day," she said in greeting to the other. "I hope you are finding your stay in Keeper's Pass well?"

"Oh! Yes, yes! Sorry, I was considering how my friends and I may... do the things we love... as a part of the community." The woman seemed to be choosing her words carefully. "My companion, child of Gorum she is, loves to break things and pound on creatures, and she consents to let me select acceptable targets. The fellow with us, a dark skinned child of Torag you may have noticed, thinks of nothing but pulling dull, lifeless rock out of the ground and creating living works of beauty and utility. And then there is me."

(( OOC'ly, I need to retcon the core of the "Darsadi Personna" as a character for Pathfinder Online. The "Darsadi" character... the voice in my head that speaks for her, is confused, and so am I as her "author". So I'm going to leave the above response as is, and head to General chat to open a discussion on how to remove the confusion "Darsadi" and I both suffer. ))

Darsadi paused, taking a glance from her thoughts freshly penned on paper. She extended a hand, "I am Darsadi Callinova, is it considered rude that I would ask your name and station in this community?"

"I am Nadya Peraina, a pleasure to meet you," she said as she returned the handshake. "And no it would not be. I am the Sentinel here at Keeper's Pass. If there is anything I can do for you or your companions, please let me know."  She then gave an amused expression as she addressed the comment of Darsadi's companion liking to beat on things. "Though, your companion will find much to fight up in these mountains. We seem to share them with quite a few ogres.  Most not so friendly as our own tavernkeep."

"You need to work on your jokes, Dar."

"Still working on it, but the magic is getting better, and 'Killing Joke' does work. I still don't know how Wizards can stand this stuff."

Several days later, Darsadi and Rogamae were back hunting for ogres. The two women had observed and practiced group combat, both with Keepers of the Circle and a group from nearby Phaeros, also besieged by ogres.

"We're getting better at it, good enough to do a bit on our own and bring back supplies." Rogamae checked her quiver, "I'm getting low though, time to head back."

"Yeah, I'm getting tired of my own jokes anyway. Let's head back and report. It's getting daylight."
