re: Levels of PvP and PvE by Ring

0

Hello everyone, I believe that it would be beneficial to have a discussion concerning the potential level of Player verse Player (PvP) and Player verse Environment (PvE) members of various rings will be exposed to.  I believe that PvP and PvE is something that every member of the Keepers of the Circle (KotC) should expect to face at some point but some Rings/sub-Rings will have more or less than others.  I’m hoping that we can all work together to get an accurate idea about these levels for all of the rings and sub-rings, here are my thoughts on this subject:

Crystal:

(War mages) I think that there will be some members of Crystal that will have a considerable amount of PvP and PvE exposure.

(Magical Item Crafters) if the crafting of magical items is handled in Crystal it would be a low PvP and PvE vocation.

(Librarian) the idea of PCs that gather information could be quite PvP/PvE light, unless they have to descend into Lich tombs or something to get the info, then not so much.  >.>

Earth:

(Gatherers) low to high PvP/PvE, depending on the area of the resource to be gathered.  Mining star metal could get crazy.  >.>

(Carpenters) if there is enough demand for this for there to be Earth specialists in this area, they would have low PvP/PvE.

Gold:  I would imagine a low PvP, perhaps some PvE during travel.  On the other hand rival player groups may try to intercept diplomatic relations between companies by attacking diplomatic envoys, maybe.

Edit:  (Merchants) with caravans low to high depending on the trade route.  Merchants traveling separately from a caravan low.

Edit:  (Diplomats) low, encouraged to carry little in way of equipment to present a less appealing target for bandits.

Iron:  I would imagine that this ring would have about as little PvP and PvE as you could get.

Light:

Philosophy of Peace I would imagine like Gold in most cases.

Philosophy of War:  A high involvement in PvP and PvE.

Shadow:  I would imagine that they could be exposed to considerable PvP gathering information on other companies and PvE when gathering information about monster escalation.

Steel:  The highest PvP of all rings with plenty of PvE to boot.

Wood:

Striders:  Similar to Shadow

Whisperers:  I’m guessing slightly more than Lights Philosophy of Peace

Wolf Pack:  Solid PvE, plenty of PvP

I think it accurate to say the Gold will be low PvP. One goal I have is to get other major groups to recognize diplomat/ambassadorial roles as non-valid targets (perhaps encouraged by having them not actually carry around much to loot). Our greatest PvP role will likely be the Envoy/Venturers that travel with caravans, as I expect that will be the highest value target for any Circle movements. I do not expect we'll get much concurrence from bandits to not target those...

But merchants from Gold would be targets for PvP.

Unless members of Iron need to quest for recipes then there is practically no chance of PvP or PvE,  unless they want to.

Yes, my assumption is the merchants of Gold will be with the caravans when targeted. Lone merchants won't have very much loot, proportionally, to target and would really just be as subject to PvP as any other random player.

Just as long as we acknowledge that just because a Ring's activities mainly revolve around PVE or PVP or a little of both, doesn't mean that character who belongs to that Ring must also be restricted to those choices.

Correct. A member of Gold could go out on a hunting party with Wood or a guard watch with Steel if they want. They don't need to be members or dedicated PvE or PvP.

Also one thing we need to remember:

No matter how nicely we write up our intentions and organisation in the end (on release) we are going to face the usual crowd that only join PvP games to harrass people.

There's a huge potential for frustration when others 'break our server/game' because they will not accept our rules/guide lines.

And my position as a diplomat and merchant--we deal with those folks by crushing them to paste. The "unfun" folks only go away when it becomes unfun for them.

As a Harvester and Diplomat my main concern is about the route we secure to travel our goods to their destination in our Hall, or from the Hall to other hexes. I feel Earth will be heavily supported by Steel and Wood in that regard though.

I advocate members of all Rings spending some time with Steel and/or Wood to gain some basic combat skills. If all Keepers are combat-ready, we reduce our risk overall. I also think it will be beneficial if we can revive some of the discussions from last year about holding tournaments with other orgs.

I began reading all the dev blog posts in order yesterday.  I'm about half-way through at this point.

If I understand correctly, there are a number of mechanisms to discourage random murderers:

  1. Within settled hexes, laws may be passed against murder, i.e. check a box in the settlement configurator or similar.  When in effect, anybody who kills somebody else gets the criminal flag and can be killed by anyone else with either minimal or no penalty.
  2. The victim of a murder has the following direct options:
    1. Rebuke - spend rep to lower the murderer's reputation
    2. Bounty - spend coin to place a price on the murderer's head
    3. Death Curse - spend rep to weaken the player's gear bindings

Those are likely to add up quickly for any habitual murderers. They won't solve the problem of course, but it should help manage it.

Yes, I 'm presently very encouraged by the mechanical approach GW is taking to address this sort of problem. I'm hopeful that combined with a united, active community that is like-minded on "positive play" we will have the structure necessary to make PFO a ground-breaker in the area of dealing with this particular MMO problem.

I'm not really saying that these are rule/guide lines that will effect the aggression of outsiders, rather I feel that some Rings will request/demand/desire more PvP/PvE than others.

I would agree as well, I plan on Orboros having some form of role to play in combat.  I'm not sure if that will be archer support, healing, buffing, control, summoning it depends on how things shake out.

Having said that I'm not against people playing a pacifist PC either, it will be easier if they are in certain ring(s) though IMO.
